Tinderbox - Tinderbox [2011 Belgium / Netherlands] @320

$

In Tinderbox, folksong, button accordion and uilleann pipes blend with guitar sounds from the new wave era and old school drum machines.
This album was recorded in 2011, when Tinderbox emerged on various folk stages in Belgium. The men of Hot Griselda were looking forward to blend some vocals into their steamy mix of original compositions played on traditional instruments. We had a lot of fun arranging and composing this material. Some tracks have traditional lyrics set to an original tune, others are completely traditional and others fully original. Although all of the musicians have now tindered other fires, we didn’t want to keep these songs from you. We are thankful and happy that you want to receive this gift from us and we hope that you enjoy it!

Calum Stewart & Heikki Bourgault [2011 Scotland / Bretagne] @320

A leading instrumentalist in Contemporary Traditional, British Isles, European and World music, Calum Stewart is establishing a unique style along his way, the sound of his Wooden Flute being fundamental to this. Coming from a new generation of Breton musicians, Heikki Bourgault's traditional yet modern, unique interpretations, push the limits of the open tuned guitar.
Originally from the North of Scotland and brought up with the traditional music of his native Morayshire, Calum Stewart has a developed a distinctive contemporary-traditional voice. Through collaborations with a vast array of musicians from many different genres, in the UK and Internationally, Calum has absorbed many different influences on his musical journey.
Formed through an excisting musical friendship, Calum Stewart and Heikki Bougault began their musical journey together in 2008.
Rooted in Celtic music of the British Isles, Calum was brought up among the strong musical traditions of his native Scotland. Starting on the penny whistle at a young age, Calum then moved onto the Wooden Flute. Whilst being dedicated to the traditional music of his home land, Calum is constantly searching for the voice that goes beyond borders and melodies which are not geographically cemented.
Coming from a new generation of guitarists, Heikki embraces the strong tradition of Breton musicians, whilst pushing the boundaries of the open-tuned guitar. His knowledge of Fest Noz dance, both as dancer and musician, nourishes his composition in the Breton style, whilst giving him a solid base to explore new ground.
This urge to look beyond borders, pushing the limits, whilst respecting traditions is what brings Calum Stewart and Heikki Bourgault together : With old instruments, a new sound is forged.

Not folk, but still good music

Le Beau Milo's music invites you to Paris from the 1910s to the 1950s: from roots bal musette and its mysteries to 40's swing waltzes, realistic songs, auvergnat "cabrette "(bagpipe) and so on! No synth, nor electric guitar but ragtime musette and old-fashioned swing like never heard anymore nowadays. On the program, jazz waltzes, paso doble, fox trott, tango and bourrée auvergnate with diatonic accordion, but also singing, banjos, violin, drums, tuba, cabrette and slide whistle!

Pentangle - The Time Has Come 1967-73 (Box Compilation) [2007 England] @320

I'd say Pentangle is one of the rarest of british folk-groups. Not in the sense their albums are rare to find but rare meaning outstanding. Their blend of progressive, folk and rock sensibilities are unmatched, as far as I'm concerned. The first six albums they made are all worth having, containing utterly beautifl, haunting and engaging music.
If you're looking for simply a compilation I'd recommend Light flight, a great collection of some of their best material. But if you're alreadya serious fan like me this box set is mandatory. It walks the thin line between the greatest hits and rarer stuff, like live recordings and music from the screen. Now, I'm not sure about devoting one entire disc to one single concert. I'd rather have seen more live stuff from their entire career but there you go. Is that any reason to complain? No, not really. The box is easily worth 4,5 stars.
Besides, the box is visually stunning and really gives me goose bumps just looking at it. Wondrous stuff!

Le Vent Du Nord - Symphonique (Canada 2009) @320

Formed in 2002, Le Vent Du Nord are one of the bands influenced by, and following in the footsteps of, La Bottine Souriante. They are well known for their endless enthusiasm, whilst their live performance is electrifying. So this live album comes with high expectations.

What we have here is La Vent du Nord performing their material to the accompaniment of Quebec City Symphonic Orchestra in front of a live audience. I had my doubts that it might become a bit smooth and watered down, and indeed it comes close to being at times, but it is always rescued by the musicianship and wonderful rhythms of the band. The symphony arrangements of Tom Myron work to enhance the music.

It must have been a wonderful night as the audience left the concert hall in the snowstorm, with the glow of the music to keep them warm on their journey home.

Symphonique by Le Vent du Nord and the Quebec Symphony Orchestra is very tres bonne-or something like that!

Mélusine - Mélusine [1975 France] @320

$

Recorded in Paris in July 1975 for Polydor and released in September 1975, this disc is the first album of the trio formation (formed by Jean-Loup Baly, Jean-François Dutertre and Yvon Guilcher) which will make the Mélusine group known.

The disc opens with a song describing the miseries of the military condition, "Le Matin au point du jour", which will contribute to the success of Mélusine, a song both very dark and very beautiful, telling the story of a soldier who is murdering his officer. She was blacklisted on public radio for several months because of her perceived anti-militarist character. Fortunately, numerous live concerts on the radio, appearances on television and the frequent passage of a title like "Je descends dans mon jardin" make the album known.

Mélusine also offers a new version of "Pierre de Grenoble" (from his own collections in the Cévennes), very different from that of Malicorne by its refined appearance, its totally different music and its alternative text, as well as two polyphonic ranges. a cappella, including a version of "La Peronnelle" with music there too very different from that of Malicorne. As for the "Girls who enter dance" of which Yvon Guilcher is the author and the "Ronde du Tournebout", composed by Jean-Loup Baly, they seem directly from the tradition.

But it is above all the polyphonic treatment of the songs that will strike the public and build the image of Mélusine as an innovative vocal group.

Thus, from this first disc Mélusine asserts his musical style: polyphonies based on popular models, but open to harmonic innovation, songs strictly accompanied by traditional acoustic instruments, but with research of alliances of timbres between plucked strings, strings rubbed and different winds for each song.

The repertoire of this first album harmoniously alternates a cappella polyphonies and instrumental songs, punctuated by some traditional dances, dances and songs being taken from collections or coming from collections.

Novar - Starling [2019 Belgium / France] @320

$

Nine original tracks feature on this album by the dance-orientated Belgian/French quartet: Aurelian Clarnbaux (accordion), Jeroen Geerinck (keyboard/mandola), Toon van Mierlo (bagpipes) and Thierry Nouat (hurdy-gurdy).

The sound-world of the CD has something in common with the Blowzabella classic Vanilla, although Novar plough a somewhat narrower furrow, sometimes incorporating textures (and a bass drum effect) redolent of contemporary electronic dance music. I confess to being pleased that the bass drum sound was not present throughout, but Novar certainly know how to do an up-tempo number.

One of the things that is intriguing about the CD is that, on repeated listens, the faster dance tunes seem to become less prominent in the balance of the album. This indicates that the subtleties take a while to sink in – and it also raises the question of what proportion of the repertoire present is used in the dance context. To take the excellent Du Pop A Ars as an example – the music is in multiple sections, not all of which seem obviously dance-friendly. It’s not the only track (none of which is especially long) to have a multi-sectional structure; this suggests that the album might have been put together with more of an emphasis on listening rather dancing than was apparent at first.

The album is relatively short at 33 minutes but it’s very enjoyable, as well as being a recording that reveals more the more you listen to it.

Renato and Yamandu were both born in Rio Grande Sul, in the Rio Grande do Sul region of Brazil, seventeen years apart, the first in Porto Alegre, on July 23, 1963, and the second in Passo Fundo, on January 24, 1980. Renato Borghetti started in music at the age of 10, playing a harmonica he received from his father, and quickly became an attraction at the Centro de Tradições Gaúchas that his father led. He has recorded dozens of records to this
day, and started well: Gaita-Ponto, his debut album, was the first Brazilian instrumental album to receive a gold disc (100 thousand copies).

Yamandu, also the son of musicians (singer Clari Marson and trumpeter and guitarist Algacir Costa), received musical inspiration from his parents, but also from neighboring countries, Argentina and Uruguay. He started studying the guitar at the age of 7, with his father, and even played electric guitar. The incredible technique he has today, on the 7-string guitar, developed it in a self-taught way. First listening to the music of Radamés Gnatalli, and then Baden Powell, with whom he played. He has two dozen records recorded, solo or in partnership.

They make newly created instrumental folk music for dancing. They define themselves as "a stateless group that imbues their sound with nuances that draw from French popular music and from other neighboring countries". The quintet has been working as such for just over two and a half years: Esther Sáchez (violin) and Sonsoles Arribas (violin) - the group's starting cell -, Fabio Morgetta (diatonic accordion), Diego Sánchez (acoustic guitar) and Juan de the Source (percussion). In addition, Carlos Beciro (La Musgaña) has collaborated on both mandolin and bass. A craft work built among the five that can put in the category of "waltz-folk", a type of music spread throughout Europe that allows both dancing on the dance floor and relaxed listening, intimate, delicate work in the who have taken special care of the sound. The album folder is illustrated by Tomás Gimeno. They have marked a unique way of working –as the instrumental duo Fetén Fetén also do– playing their own pieces based on tradition, avoiding localisms –without being confined to a specific community– and assimilating all traditions. Martina's music wants to dance invites to fill the squares with music, joy and as an effective way to get closer to each other.

A new trio project with three musicians from Liguria (Northern Italy): button accordion player Filippo Gambetta, classical guitarist Carmelo Russo and fiddle player Sergio Caputo. Bal Folk dance répertoire and original compositions mainly addressed to listening audiences are the two main musical threads followed by trio. The band toured extensively Italy from 2017, performing in important festivals such as Etétrad, Festival di Musica Popolare di Forlimpopoli, Solstizio d'Estate Stazzema, Civitella Alfedena Folk Festival, Suq Genova, Concerti all'Abbazia di S.Fruttuoso, Suoni Della Murgia, Rassegna Via Adriatica. The stylistic blend proposed by Filippo, Carmelo and Sergio combines idioms of the traditional music from Italy with melodies from Center France and the British Iles, together with Rumba Flamenco and Norther African sonorities. The trio's soundscape also gets out of the Mediterranean Sea, accompanying the listener in the atmospheres of Brazilian choro and forrò. A concert with multiple colors and contagious vitality. The trio releases the new album Maestrale (Visage Music) in the spring 2019.

It is obvious from this album that Filippo Gambetta is a real master on the diatonic accordion. And even though he has for this album a whole host of guest musicians - more than 20 across the album, including his usual trio - it is his accordion that is the one and only focus of the album. Sso much so that after a first casual listening the listener may possibly only remember the accordion. The music is all composed by Filippo, but is based on traditional dances - tarantella, mazurka, Musette, polka and more.

Memory Lane is an album worth of repeated listens. It’s a collection of tracks that sound familiar to everyone Irish or not, but given a new life and freshness by The High Kings. This is just their second album but it looks like they have achieved a lot. These guys know their stuff. They are real musicians with real instrumental talents. They are seasoned vocalists and their individuality shines in every track. They are also charismatic figures that looks good on your CD library. I am pleased to own this album. In terms of production, the album shimmers with clarity and lushness of sound.
