Manx Gaelic singer Ruth Keggin was awarded a grant by Culture Vannin to produce a solo album of traditional and contemporary Manx songs. The twelve track album was recorded on the West coast of Scotland and features vocals, guitar, double bass, fiddle and wooden flute.
CD cover Sheear (‘Westward’) is a live studio recording featuring an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary Manx Gaelic songs, arranged in a fresh and imaginative way.
Ruth (vocals, piano and flute) performs along with guitarist David Pearce and double-bassist Vanessa McWilliam. Irish flautist and sean nos singer Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin and Manx fiddle player Tomas Callister also feature on several songs.
The twelve-track album comprises a plethora of different textures, from unaccompanied pieces like Arrane y skeddan (Song of the herring) through to a more unusual soundscape of bowed guitar, prepared piano, shimmering fiddle and eerie double-bass harmonics used in Tree eeasteyryn boghtey (Three poor fishermen).

Ruth Keggin - Turrys (2016 Isle of Man) @320

$

Ruth Keggin is a Gaelic singer, firmly rooted in rich Manx heritage, who brings pride, passion and a purity to her engaging vocals.
In Turrys, her second release, she has created a rich and varied album which gracefully bows its artistic head to Scottish, Irish, and Manx musical traditions, accentuating the close relationship and yet highlighting the distinctiveness of each. Accompanied by guitar (David Pearce), double base (Vanessa Hutchinson), flute (Ruth Keggin) and flute/concertina (Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin), the music is authentic and engaging.
Much of Turrys is sung in Manx, a beautiful and lyrical language which adds immeasurably to the authentic nature of the album. Liner notes helpfully outline track origins, translating the lyrical richness of each song for all to appreciate and enjoy.
Those familiar with Runrig’s Macdonald brothers will recognise Heeym yn Geurey as the beautiful Scottish song Chi mi’n geamhradh, now translated into Manx. A story of love lost and the oncoming of winter, which is sung beautifully by Keggin, who delivers with emotion and feeling. Guitar, flute and double bass bring a reflective and atmospheric backdrop to her heartfelt vocals.
The gentle delivery of Irree ny Grieney, a contemporary song celebrating sunrise over land and sea, is warm and inspiring, with evocative yet uncomplex guitar accompaniment complementing Keggin’s refreshing vocals, which paint enticing pictures of coastal seascapes.
Napoleon’s Chanter is a set of two well-known Irish march tunes, the first of which is an enjoyable and contemporary take on Chanter’s Tune and secondly Napoleon Crossing the Alps. Driving guitar rhythms and spirited flute-playing result in a vibrant and lively track, guaranteed to set the feet tapping.
Recording samples of Ardnamurchan pistol shrimp add a rich and peaceful ebb and flow to Ushag Varrey, a peacefully reflective and haunting track, inspired by themes of environment and nature, written by Manx musician Bob Carswell. Keggin’s vocals bring an innocence and purity that fully immerses the listener in this beautiful piece.
In Turrys, (Manx Gaelic for journey), Ruth Keggin takes the listener on a musical exploration of Gaelic music linking Irish and Scottish themes to the Isle of Man’s rich and vibrant cultural heritage. She skilfully weaves stories and themes across musical cultures whilst subtlety encouraging and educating the listener along the way.
Traditional, yet creative, familiar yet new, Keggin has created an album which guides the listener on the most delightful and enjoyable of musical journeys.

The Belgian 6 piece band creates homemade compositions with a powerful folk rock blending Bal Folk a la Dedale with a dose of Blowzabella, and with frequent more or less obvious references to well known hits or TV tunes. The most obvious connotation of TV music on the album has to be in their "The A-Team" set - these guys must be great fans of this 80s TV institution. Variomatic's instruments create a mighty full contemporary folk sound, featuring sax, accordion, hurdy gurdy, guitar/banjo, bass and drums and percussion.
This one of those albums that should not really be missing in any good collection - it's music that makes happy and wants you to jump up and dance - as they say happiness is priceless so how can you afford not to have this album!

Maddy Prior, Hannah James & Giles Lewin - Shortwinger (England 2017) @320

$

Though (rightly) highly regarded as a solo singer of great stature, character and accomplishment who’s already chalked up a distinguished half-century of performing history on the folk scene (and indeed beyond), Maddy Prior’s always also enjoyed collaborating with fellow singers and musicians, whether in duo format (initially with Tim Hart, later with June Tabor) or group context (Steeleye Span, The Carnival Band) or several points in between. Of which the most memorable have been The Girls (where she was joined by Abbie Lathe and her own daughter Rose) and latterly, the eponymous trio with Hannah James and Giles Lewin, who together released a stunning and world-embracing album (3 For Joy) six years ago in 2012.

That album’s followup has thus been long awaited, and here it is at last. Shortwinger, named after a word for a hawk (particularly one of the goshawk genus), is an intelligently assembled sequence of songs and instrumental pieces that follows a loosely folk-mythological theme in exploring the occurrence and role of birds and hares in folk culture. So even before you listen to the first note you know you’re in for a treat, something pretty special that will both stimulate and satisfy, challenge and educate and greatly please.

Steeleye Span - Est'd 1969 (England 2019) @320

$

Unlike many long established bands who only add a few songs off any new album into their set lists, Steelye Span have added nearly all of ‘EST’D 1969’ into their current set list.

Take a song like ‘Harvest’, which sounds like it has been around a lot longer than it has.  A classic Steeleye Span song anchored in English history and one of the many on this album which utilises the band’s harmony vocals to great effect (all bar drummer Liam Genockey contribute backing vocals). Ian Anderson guests adding his flute playing to ‘Old Matron’, a song that wouldn’t look out of place on an early Jethro Tull album.

Maddy Prior sings a cheeky vocal on ‘Domestic’, where the second part of the song deals with a wife and her husband’s lack of ‘courage’ in the bedroom. The song also highlights that Steeleye Span have never been afraid to push the rock side of their folk rock credentials.  The song features plenty of guitar and solos from Julian Littman and Andrew ‘Spud Sinclair.

The band’s take on ‘The January Man’, written by Dave Goulder and performed by Christy Moore and Mike Harding amongst others, harks back to the 60’s folk boom as Tim Hart used to sing this. In fact the album is a good mix of modern production and sound, giving a new sound to many traditional songs and folk ballads.

Maddy’s and former member Rick Kemp’s daughter Rose Kemp wrote the excellent album closer ‘Reclaimed’. The band debuted this one on last year’s autumn tour. Sung a cappella it sounds wonderful on the headphones and the wise words of the song show nothing is permanent -

‘Roots and time will move concrete and iron,

And ivy and water will loosen any mortar,

And all that man has built will crumble down to silt’.

Newer members (both joined in 2017), multi-instrumentalist Benji Kirkpatrick and violin player Jessie May Smart, are adding to the band’s overall sound, especially the acoustic instruments played by Kirkpatrick.

Steeleye Span are sailing with confidence into their fiftieth anniversary, backed by this very enjoyable album and the band’s seemingly endless love of getting out and performing live in order to keep their songs and traditional music alive. ****

Los Cinc Jaus - Vara Vau (2017 France) @320

Los Cinc Jaus set out to explore Velay, which is actually a family affair. For Florent Paulet, in any case, which makes us discover the rich repertoire, dance tunes and songs, in Oc or in French, collected in the 1970s by the Ratapenada association, with among others Michel Paulet. And among the informants - all cited - we can find a certain Anne Paulet, from Yssingeaux (the city with five roosters, laus cinc jaus). Florent does this very happily (and very joyfully) bear fruit in what looks like another family story for those who know our productions, with Lucien Pillot (Face à Phasmes), Arnaud Bibonne (Duo Bibonne-Raibaud) and Antonin Duval (Gargamas). All four know how to put themselves at the service of a traditional repertoire, combining rigor, cadence and a certain innovation, for example in their polyphonies which are at once fine, varied and catchy.
