Balarù - Gravure (2018 Italy) @320

BUY ALBUM HERE

After years travelling and playing traditional dance music around Italy and Europe, four young musicians decided to join forces in this new project: BALARU’ (in Piedmont dialect, those who love to dance). BALARU’(Andrea Beltrando, Francesco Cavallero, Andrea Lopomo and Ilario Olivetti) set the goal of repurposing, in the Balfolk European scene, the traditional dances of their province the Piedmont, in the North West of Italy.

The work started in September 2015 with field researches, the recovering of old recordings and new arrangements of ancient popular melodies, in order to represent an important and almost unknown traditional repertoire.

In this recording you can listen to tunes from different areas of Piedmont (Val Chisone, Canavese, Val Varaita, Roero, Valli di Lanzo, etc.) along with original compositions (L'amore è.., Il Profeta, L'aiga verd, Crepuscolar) all arranged to be danceable not only as local dances, but also in the well-known French and European balfolk style.

After two more years of concerts and workshops, the band wished to leave a memory of the path made with Gravure, (engraving, carving in dialect) to carry on the precious work done by many researchers that from the 60s have revitalized wonderful melodies and songs, literally tearing them to oblivion. The hope is to have given new life to these melodies, making sure that they are still sung and danced at parties, for present and future generations.

This, their ninth album, is a live recording at the National Philharmonic Hall in Warsaw, captures the band before "The Golden Land" album was released and features mostly music from their previous album "Metamorphoses", a couple of pieces from earlier albums and one sneak preview of a Gebirtig tune. The quartet includes Bester, violinist Jaroslaw Tyrala, multi-instrumentalist Oleg Dyyak and the new young bass player Mikolaj Pospieszalski. They all perform elegantly, spotlessly and obviously are highly spirited. Of course as a band they are perfectly together and they respect each other's space, allowing for extended improvised passages.

The Shin formed in 1998 in Germany where Zaza Miminoshvili and Zurab J. Gagnidze have been living since the end of the 20th century. In the early 21st century, Mamuka Ghaghanidze hurried to join them. Since then, The Shin has been on their musical mission as a trio.
The group members are well known even in their Georgian homeland as leading composers and musicians. They have scripted pieces for productions at the Tbilisi State Theater, numerous film, TV, and radio projects, have participated in various festivals and have won several prizes in recognition of their work.
Amazingly, The Shin are able to smoothly combine Georgian folk melodies with jazz, native polyphonic singing with scat, and in general the music of the near Orient with the modern sounds popular in the West today.

The Shin - EgAri (2006 Georgia) @320

The Shin, in their search for a sound that is definitively Georgian, has created a trans-regional fusion of various Georgian styles. Their project EgAri is based on Georgian instrumental music, traditional polyphonic vocals, and folk dance, and unites for the first time these quite separate segments of Georgian culture. It is an unusual, and highly non-traditional combination of archaic and modern, Caucasian and non-Caucasian instruments, elements of Georgian harmonies with diverse jazz threads. The Shin are not iconoclasts, however. Only what continues to evolve will remain — in that spirit, The Shin see themselves as safe keepers of Georgian traditions, not its destroyers.
EgAri brought together the best musicians on the national scene, in particular virtuosos of the archaic instruments. EgAri is the reinitiation of a peaceful dialog between East and West, old and new, “Ours” and “Not-Ours”, that has been characteristic of Georgian culture for centuries. This dialog is recognizable in the poetry of Rustaveli, the paintings of Pirosmani, the architecture of Tbilisi, the choreography of George Balanchine (Georgi Balanchivadze), the films of Otar Ioseliani, and yes... …the music of The Shin.

Eoin Dillon - Pondelorum (2016 Ireland) @320

A work of genius, or madness, or possibly both, Pondelorum is the third solo album from piper Eoin Dillon, formerly with Dublin musical pioneers Kila, joined here by a cast of thousands - or at least dozens - of guest musicians. Although there are copious notes with this CD, they tell us little about the music, instead being filled with poems, anecdotes, exhortations and depositions. I'm assuming that Dillon wrote everything not otherwise ascribed, both music and text. This enigmatic character does tell us a little about himself here, if he's to be trusted: born in Dublin in 1971, to the bells of Christchurch (I bet his mother was thrilled), drifting off the beaten track soon enough, and these days freewheeling with no brakes and little sense of direction, but things don't seem to be going too badly if this recording is any indication.

Eoin Dillon's piping is tighter, sharper, at times more urgent than on his previous albums. The opening Dancing On The Radio is a lovely lyrical piece, showing great control under Eoin's wild open technique, while Flor Begley The Piper From Crossbarry pushes on at a gallop, heedless of obstacles. The clever Christchurch Bells combines a pulsing reel with those portentous peals. Uisce Faoi Thalamh resembles the classic 17th century airs of aristocratic Ireland, with their songs of faery and fey spirits, beautifully played on pipes and harpsichord. Dillon finishes with a slow piece, more jazz than trad, drums and trombone evoking Soho rather than Smithfield. There are some imperfections here, more on the whistle than the pipes, but this is an outstanding album and a rare treat for anyone with an interest in the future of Irish music. I should point out that the track names on the sleeve are quite different from those in the notes, so don't trust your eyes on Pondelorum. Rely on your ears.

Vinyl Rip. 96Khz/24 bit.

Makám & Kolinda - a domestic ambassador for world music - operated between 1980 and
1984. Musical predecessors of Kolinda and C.S.Ö. They were (Creative Studio Five) bands. While the music of the Carpathian Basin and the rhythmic and melodic world of the Balkans were brought from Kolinda through the compositions and folk song arrangements of Péter Dabasi, C.S.Ö. his improvisational chamber music, contemporary jazz and North Indian classical music reflected the works of Zoltán Krulik. During their short four-year existence, they toured Western Europe as a star orchestra at major world music festivals and produced two records for the Munich Records in the Netherlands, Makám and Kolinda (1982) and On the Way (1984). The 1982 release, After the Wind, was released in Hungary in 1984, courtesy of Hungaroton. He has been featured in several films by Pál Zolnay, including Kinga Illyés' Lyrical Oratorio (from the poems of Domokos Szilágyi). and Szabolcs Szőke Son of Man c. which was recorded by MTV. Following the split of the band, both Kolinda and Makam, on their own, have achieved significant success on international world-music stages - from Paris to Moscow, Copenhagen to Belgrade, Canada to India - and have produced about thirty multiple gold and diamond records in French, Dutch, German and domestic publishers. The 30-year anniversary concert brings back the most memorable songs of the four-year-old, but gives us a taste of Kolinda and Makam's own world and latest songs, spiced up with surprises.

Déanta - Déanta (1990 Ireland) @320

Déanta (pronounced: Jaunt-a) is one of the top traditional Celtic bands in Ireland.
Formed in Northern Ireland's County Antriam, the group is known for its tight, ensemble, playing and the crystalline vocals of All-Ireland champion singer Mary Dillon. According to Irish Music Magazine, "Unlike some of the other guns currently making waves on both sides of the Atlantic, Déanta have not gone down the well worn route of 'give it a dose of rocket fuel, foot to the floor, out blast The Bothy Band and divil the pillion passenger".

In his liner notes for Déanta's self-titled 1993 album, Jackie Dixon took a similar view, writing, "The old values inherent in traditional music are held intact and are never under threat from modern influences that the band judiciously introduce into their repertoire."

The musical foundation of Déanta was furnished by Katie O'Brien, who played fiddle and viola, and her brother, Eoghan, who played guitar and harp. The original group also featured Paul Mullan (flute, whistles), Clodagh Warnock (bouzouki, fiddle, bodhran, percussion) and Mary Dillon (vocals, synthesizer, guitar, harp). By the time that they released their second album, Ready for the Storm, in 1994, Mullan had been replaced by Deidre Havlin and Rosie Mulholland (keyboards, fiddle) had been added.

Although they were one of the best selling acts on the Green Linnet label, each musician maintained a day job and the group toured rarely. In early 1998, Deanta announced that they were disbanding.

Déanta - Whisper of a Secret (1997 Ireland) @320

Déanta are based in Antrim and consist of five girls and one guy. They play traditional Irish music, and they play it like no other band on the planet. Unlike some of the other young guns currently making waves on both sides of the Atlantic, Déanta have NOT gone down the well worn route of "give it a dose of rocket fuel, foot to the floor, out blast the Bothy Band and divil the pillion passenger."

Déanta offer a rounded, more intelligent and coherent treatment of the tradition, they give the tunes life as well as lift; paying attention to tempo, time is given for melodies to develop and resolve. Ensemble playing is thoughtful and well worked. Guest musicians are employed to add and fill out the sound, as on the final track where the saxophone of Richard Buckley adds a flavour that is their own and not a poor pastiche of the Flannagan Brothers or Moving Hearts. The songs are equally impressive, perhaps the weakest is the old classic, The Blacksmith, whilst Andy M Stewart's Where are You? would surely please himself. The song, Willie and Mary (which is only given as a fragment in Gale Huntington's reprint of Henry's Songs of the People H89), is fleshed out here, and the anatomy is beautiful. If you like La Lugh, and the Ulster sensibility for the tradition, Déanta will knock your socks off.

With a few musical notes and a few explanatory sentences, you're in the dance, with or without your parents. "Le Petit Bal Ratamouche" is a circle that turns upside down, captains who make bridges, a song under the stars ... not to mention the princesses in their handbags.

The three artists offer their little ball for moments to spend with family or children, at the heart of a festival, school, city or any other special event. They lead projects in schools around song, dance and traditional music, leading to a friendly and (re) creative ball practice.
